I have just come across news that Mr Fairbanks, my beloved art teacher from 1979-1982 at John Jay HS, has passed away. What sad news indeed. I loved this man. He taught me so much more than I can list here. From refining my skills by staying after school helping me perfect my paintings to entrusting me with set designs for the many plays he was involved with at the school, he never failed to care. Though my career has been in the advertising industry, I always hoped to write/illustrate books and wanted him to receive my first front page dedication. I still strive to check this box. RIP Gene. You changed the trajectory of my life for the better. One of the few. One of the best. I hope you're painting the heavens as only you can.

Thank you Mr. Fairbanks on behalf of my brother, Ed Lambert, and me. You were an unforgettable influence in both of our lives. Ed passed away in 2007, but he was an artist until the end. I will never forget you.

I had the unique experience of teaching across the hall from Gene from 1970 to 1983...
Fondly ( and with a smile) remembering listening to Pink Floyd over and over again !
Gene and I took the kids on several amazing field trips to museums and galleries in New York , Stormville, Stockbridge and other places and teamed up to start the schools literary arts magazine as well.....
What a great time everyone had.
Being across the hall from Gene, meant we laughed a lot also shared ideas and approaches to teaching...He was such a good influence for so many students.
My thoughts are with his family at this sad time..

Mr. Fairbanks was my art teacher in 1976-77. I have never forgotten his passion for painting, and the influence it had on me. He introduced me also to the dream world of Maxfield Parrish - a life long admiration for color and landscape. I have thought of Mr. Fairbanks with fondness and appreciation many times over the years. Being in his class was one of my best High School memories. So you see, it is true- an inspiring teacher is like a ripple in a pond that radiates outward touching many other lives. Peace and comfort to his loved ones.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of Gene's passing. He was a teacher at John Jay when I was a student there, and was still teaching when I started working there. Our conversations were far - ranging, lively, and always a pleasure. I never walked away from him with a smile on my face and greater knowledge. When Gene found that I enjoyed Maxfield Parrish, he went out of his way to show me anything that he could find about him.
Always a classy, gentle, and humorous person - he will be missed.

Very sorry to hear of the Passing of such a great influence in my and so many others lives.
I graduated John Jay in 1976 and was his student for years, and without his help I doubt I would have stayed to finish school and my life would have turned out much the worse.
Mr. Fairbanks was a true "Game Changer" for so many.....

Mr. Fairbanks was a gentle kind soul as I knew him fro 69-72 at NHS. I will never forget the Cape I was asked to make for him when he played El Gallo in the teachers production play of the Fantasticks. He thanked me for seeing it and lining it in red with a wonderful drawing. You opened the minds to many students for the appreciation of the arts. Well done Mr. Fairbanks... You will be missed
