Obituary of Alice A Didier

Alice Allgeyer, who on occasion referred to herself as a "Brooklyn Brat", was born on June 3, 1930, into the loving embrace of Gertrude and Joseph Allgeyer in Brooklyn, NY. Her favorite parts of her childhood unfolded in a small bungalow nestled in Huntington, Long Island, where weekends and summers were filled with cherished memories. Alice found her lifelong partner in Donald Didier, whom she married in 1951. In 1956, they purchased a home of their own only a block from her childhood bungalow, where they lived countless joyful moments with their two sons, Gary and David. Some maintain that it was Alice who introduced into the Didier bloodline the family tradition of being right (and not shy about it) almost always; this was thankfully tempered by a genuinely good heart and a desire to do well unto all those around her. In 1998, Alice and Donald embarked on a new chapter in Granville, NY, drawn by the charm of the area where their son Gary and his family had settled earlier. Together with their sons Gary and David, they built their "dream home with beautiful views", and embraced the community, forming many lasting friendships. Alice played a pivotal role in fundraising and volunteering at the Haynes House of Hope, embodying her spirit of generosity, and was an active member of the South Granville Congregational Church. After Donald's passing in 2009, Alice continued to radiate warmth and kindness amongst her family, friends, and community. In November 2021, she transitioned to Holbrook Adult Home, where she found comfort in the warm setting, and forged new bonds with the compassionate staff and fellow residents. Her family remains profoundly thankful for the excellent care and support she received there. Alice had a lifelong appreciation for culture, writing, antiques the art and many adventures. Her passion for history led her to actively participate in the Huntington Historical Society. With an eye for the aesthetic, Alice curated an impressive collection of primitive lighting and glassware. Alice was also a gifted writer, and had numerous short stories and poems published. One of Alice's crowning achievements was earning a degree in English and Teaching from Stony Brook University as an adult student. Alice was also happy to put her many creative expressions, as well as her exacting craftsmanship, to work for her community. Numerous babies were welcomed into the world with one of her signature quilted patchwork play balls. Her attention to detail and perfectionism leant itself well to the art of calligraphy, which she put to work making certificates for births, baptisms, and other noteworthy occasions. She was an independent woman who became accomplished at almost anything she tried and was a natural leader. Alice departed peacefully on Friday, April 19th, 2024. She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, cherished by her surviving son Gary and his wife Theresa, daughter-in-law Kathy, grandsons Dan with his wife Amy, Brian with his wife Margaret, Devon, and Brendan, as well as great-granddaughters Danielle, Amelia, and Jocelyn. Additionally, she is remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Donald, her Son David, and her brother Roger. A service will be held at The South Granville Congregational Chruch on May 18 at 11 AM.
